My work reflects a lifelong interest in the ways in which people of all cultures use magic and mysticism to make sense of their world. I use artifacts found in places of power; remote, isolated environments, where these objects call to me. They are found in nature or hidden amongst the debris of our technological society. As a child, I remember picking up objects that shimmered urgently with meaning, rust-caked hardware, broken toy pieces, rocks and branches, that I would then orchestrate in relationships of infinite variety on my schoolroom desk. The sense of freedom this gave me ran in counterpoint to the almost claustrophobic awareness that I was trapped within the ability to look only out of one pair of eyes, my own. This began a lifelong quest to explore the ways in which objects can be combined to express universal themes, particularly the idea that our destiny or fortune can be controlled by magical means.
